Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity was founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C., January 9, 1914, by three young African-American male students. The Founders, Honorable A. Langston Taylor, Honorable Leonard F. Morse, and Honorable Charles I. Brown, wanted to organize a Greek letter fraternity that would truly exemplify the ideals of brotherhood, scholarship, and service.

The Founding Years…

In 1923 in the great City of Newark, New Jersey Chi Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. was chartered as an Alumni Chapter. Chi Sigma flourished after its initial years of formation.

One of the initial members of the chapter, Brother Dr. Thomas H. Wright, was a leading physician in the City of Newark.

Bro. Dr. Wright was from Guthrie, Oklahoma. Bro. Wright was the first doctor to open in Newark a private maternity ward and sanitarium for “Negroes.” The Wright Sanitarium open on June 21, 1921 at 768 High Street, near Clinton Avenue.

On Saturday, January 11th, 2025, the Chi Sigma Chapter celebrated 111 years of Brotherhood, Scholarship, and Service at its annual Founders’ Day Brunch. Brothers and guests gathered for fellowship and reflections on Sigma’s legacy. The event honored our founders’ vision while reaffirming our commitment to service and mentorship.

On Saturday, January 11th, 2025, the Chi Sigma Chapter celebrated 111 years of Brotherhood, Scholarship, and Service at its annual Founders’ Day Brunch. Brothers and guests gathered for fellowship and reflections on Sigma’s legacy. The event honored our founders’ vision while reaffirming our commitment to service and mentorship. 

Christmas Fest

On Saturday, December 21, 2024, The brothers of the Chi Sigma Chapter in collaboration with the Eta Omicron Zeta and Beta Alpha Rho Zeta Chapters of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, hosted the annual Community Christmas Fest: A Sigma-Zeta Family Event at Hillside High School. The event brought together families from the Hillside community to celebrate the holiday season with toys, coats, and festive cheer, impacting over 100 children and their families.

On December 14, 2024, the brothers of the Chi Sigma Chapter, along with family, friends, and community members, gathered at the Northern New Jersey Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Sparta, NJ, for a profoundly moving Wreath Laying Ceremony. This annual event is part of a national initiative to honor and remember the sacrifices of our nation’s veterans during the holiday season.

On December 14, 2024, the brothers of the Chi Sigma Chapter, along with family, friends, and community members, gathered at the Northern New Jersey Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Sparta, NJ, for a profoundly moving Wreath Laying Ceremony.
